Naturopathy

Naturopathy (a.k.a. naturopathic medicine) is an alternative medicine which emphasizes disease prevention, treatment and optimal health through natural therapeutic methods. The naturopathic medicine does not involve the use of drugs or medicines, but with practical and effective use of the non-toxic natural therapies, it helps people to restore and maintain individual’s health and wellness. These natural therapies may include dietary and lifestyle changes, herbal remedies, homeopathy, acupuncture, stress reduction, exercise therapy, or even using dietary supplements.

The naturopathic practitioners (a.k.a. naturopath; naturopathic doctors/physicians) always follow six key principles of naturopathy:

  • Healing power of nature
  • Identify and treat the causes
  • First do no harm
  • Doctor as teacher
  • Treat the whole person

Healing power of nature

Naturopathy believes the body inherent self-healing process, which can heal and recover itself when there is nothing affects the self-healing process. The naturopathic practitioners will help the patient to find out the factors that affect healing process and suggest ways to eliminate it, rather than using drugs or medicines to heal the body.

Identify and treat the cause

The naturopathic practitioners always identify the underlying causes of certain illness, and then treat the causes to eliminate the illness, rather than treating or relieving the symptoms only. They investigate the causes by understanding the patient’s lifestyle, eating habits, family history, medical history and etc., and then provide solutions to eliminate the causes of illness.

First do no harm

The naturopathic practitioners treat the patient using natural therapeutic methods and emphasize the first rule, “Do no harm”. They are strictly avoiding the therapeutic methods that suppress symptoms or remove underlying causes but leaving harmful side effects to the body. They always work with individual’s self-healing process, treat or prevent illness with least risk of harmful side effects, such as lifestyle changes, exercises, dietary control and etc.

Doctor as teacher

Naturopathic practitioners not only provide solutions to solve patient’s health problem, but at the same time they educate their patients, encourage them to take responsibilities on their own health and wellness. They will teach their patients to let them know their current conditions, factors, solutions, and ways to maintain body health.

Treat the whole person

The most powerful side of naturopathy is, it treats the whole person, not only eliminate diseases and illnesses. Naturopathy is a cure for several aspects, which include an individual’s physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, social and environmental factors.

Prevention

Naturopathy focuses more on optimizing overall health, or can be said that it helps people to prevent diseases and illnesses. Most naturopathic practitioners help the patients to reduce risk of diseases and illnesses by promoting healthy lifestyle and improving quality of life.
