Antarctic Krill Oil

Krill oil is extracted from the Antarctic krill, Euphausia Superba.

Antarctic krill lives in the purest and pristine Antarctic Ocean with minimal pollution and destruction. It is a small crustacean, which is only about 3 to 6 cm long and feeding mainly on phytoplankton. They are the basis of the Antarctic biological chain, often eaten by penguins, seals, whales, and other marine animals.

Antarctic krill congregates in large schools, often drift in swarms that are huge and dense at the twilight zone, which is about 200 meters of the ocean depth. Antarctic krill is also the largest known biomass for a single species on Earth. The biomass of Antarctic krill is about twice the size of the human population!

Wondering if krill harvesting in Antarctica is sustainable? Basically, harvesting companies are required to follow the strict regulations proposed by the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) to ensure environmental sustainability, while Friend of the Sea (FOS) certification ensures the harvesting companies practice sustainable krill fishing, guarantee the quality of fisheries products and protect the marine environment. In current situation, krill harvesting will not affect or destruct the ecology and environment of Antarctica.
